California's economy continues to be transformed by globalization. Previously prosperous industries are faltering, while new ones flourish. This transformation has been largely driven by the rise of the knowledge economy, in which knowledge is the source of competitiveness. In this new economy it is science, research, technology and innovation which are central to economic prosperity. Dr. Bruce Yandle of Clemson University will discuss the challenge California faces during this transformation and how it compares to other states in the country. He will also share strategies California policy makers might pursue to preserve and enhance economic growth while ensuring opportunities for greater prosperity for all Californians.
The course will cover:
Bruce Yandle is a Dean Emeritus of the College of Business & Behavioral Sciences and the BB&T Scholar at Clemson University, where he has been a faculty member since 1969. From 1976 to 1978, he was a senior economist on the staff of the President's Council on Wage and Price Stability, where he reviewed and analyzed newly proposed regulations. In addition, Dr. Yandle was executive director of the Federal Trade Commission and is the author or co-author of numerous books and articles. He received his Ph.D. and M.B.A. from Georgia State University and his A.B. degree from Mercer University.
