Communications Manager
The Mercatus Center at George Mason University is seeking a Communications Manager who will work to enhance the Mercatus Center’s visibility and public image by building the organization’s positive brand through consistent marketing communications as well as media placements for its scholars and research in international, national, Washington, DC and targeted trade media outlets.

Responsibilities:
- Under the guidance of the Director of Communications, oversee formulation and implementation of marketing communications plans for research projects and scholars.
- Developing and pitching story ideas about the Mercatus Center, research, and scholars to national media outlets. This includes:
- Working with program managers and scholars to develop media strategies for releases of new research and promotion of existing research;
- Creating and delivering pitches to members of the media via phone, email, and press release;
- Identifying appropriate target media lists by monitoring media coverage and using our online media directory;
- Developing working relationships with key members of the media; and
- Preparing scholars for media interviews and conducting follow-up feedback sessions.
- Tracking mainstream media and blog activity on Mercatus and issues related to Mercatus research areas.
- Editing and pitching op-eds, book reviews, and other articles by Mercatus scholars to national media outlets.
- Preparing press kits and clipping books.
- Under the direction of the Director of Communications, manage Mercatus’s visual brand inclusive of printed materials (publications, signs, collateral material, etc.) and Web site.
- Manage graphic designer so that all previously defined successes, benchmarks, and homeruns are met with regard to graphic design and production support. Ensure graphic designer is well versed in Mercatus visual brand identity and produces pieces consistent with our visual brand; and
- Monitor workload so we maintain adequate staffing of position to support production.
- Production of the quarterly Mercatus newsletter.
- Providing assistance when needed to other aspects of Mercatus’s marketing and communications activities including the Mercatus Web site.
Requirements:
- 5 or more years of media relations experience with demonstrable placements and superb communications skills.
- B.A. or higer in English, Communications, Journalism, or similar discipline.
- A strong eye for detail, an ability to multi-task, and and energetic, entrepreneurial spirit.
