The Economics of Trade and Globalization
| Start: | Tuesday, August 21, 2001 |
| End: | Friday, August 24, 2001 |
This course allows participants to better answer such question as:
- What's good for America?
- What is trade really about?
- What are trade deficits really about? What causes them?
- What is the definition of dumping?
Dr. Roberts discusses the depth and complexity of economics of trade issues. He argues that "if you try to make everything for yourself you get poor. In other words self-sufficiency is the road to poverty, while trade is the way to wealth". Speaker focuses on comparative advantage as a "round about way to wealth". Russell Roberts emphasizes that "trade doesn't create or destroy jobs. Trade in general is changing the types of jobs and wages associated with them." Speaker concludes that trade doesn't affect the total number of jobs, but only changes the amount of jobs in specific area.
Carol Crawford continues discussion on the economics of trade and focuses on the U.S. trade remedies and the WTO. She explains such categories as unfair trade, fair trade and anti-dumping. Speaker also touches on the notion of predation and the notion of differential prices.
