Trade and Aid: Searching for Solutions to Global Poverty

Recently, efforts at alleviating global poverty have focused on lending to governments of developing countries in exchange for fiscal discipline and stable monetary policy. The effectiveness of this policy, however, is limited by domestic cultural institutions, corruption, and a lack of local knowledge. To help policymakers address these concerns, the Mercatus Center will present a three-day course that will identify policies that would encourage prosperity in the developing world.

By augmenting the existing New Institutional Economics with insights from market process, public choice, and constitutional political economy, we will provide a richer account of incentive alignment and the importance of country-specific norms and tradition when considering development projects.
