Tevi Troy is back on The Remnant to explore the strange state of the American presidency. In recent years, presidents have used the power of the executive branch to profoundly alter our system of government—indeed, the presidency Joe Biden inhabits is far removed from that which Bill Clinton left behind. But could the increased importance of the presidency to American life actually be a good thing? Furthermore, why have our recent presidents failed to become figures of national unity? Sort of in the spirit of getting to the point in your stardom where you don’t care what anyone thinks and just do whatever you want to see how much of your audience goes along with it…

    I love the Dana Carvey Bush impersonation! And being as I was (cough) born after he left office, it’s my main image of HW. I’ve seen more clips of Carvey as Bush than I have of the former president himself. Maybe that says something about my historical blind spot…

    Point taken on us younguns not taking criticism well. Jonah, you don’t understand, it’s not our fault we were raised to be fragile and have feelings! Just kidding. For real though, in legitimate cases of bosses abusing their workers, I don’t think it’s “entitled” to say that it should stop even if in the “old days” it was normal. See Weinstein, Harvey.

    Really interesting how huge advances in presidential power this century coincide with the advent of a de facto 60 vote threshold, giving Congress a pass to functionally neuter itself and successfully campaign solely off of politically impossible culture war positions

    In the pre-WWW days of the Internet, access was very limited compared to today. Most Internet-connected people got their access through a military contractor, a research lab, or a university. This early Internet included a collection of discussion forums known as USENET. Like all forums, it had several cultural understandings that had to be mastered before one's participation really fit in. Each September, new classes arriving at the universities would flood into these forums for the first time and need acculturation.

    In 1993, commercial services for the first time began offering Internet service (and USENET access) to homes. This event became known as Eternal September.
