In a recent essay [1], President and CEO of the Institute for Humane Studies Emily Chamlee-Wright [2] laid out her vision of academic leadership.

Challenges for an academic leader:

  • Change the world for the better
  • Embody the values you hope to see advanced in the broader world
  • Take responsibility for your own growth and development

Chamlee-Wright emphasizes humility and the need to recognize the inherent dignity of others while warning against praise-addiction that can cloud the judgment of an otherwise effective leader.
