Dissertation Fellowship

The Dissertation Fellowship Program is a one year, renewable, competitive fellowship program for students who have advanced to candidacy in their PhD program at George Mason University.

Applications are currently closed. Applications for the 2025-2026 academic year will open in the Fall of 2024.

Application Details

To apply to the Dissertation Fellowship, click the “Apply” button and complete the online application, including:

  • A 1-2 page cover letter​
  • A current resume/CV
  • A 2-page description of your planned dissertation, including a list of your dissertation committee members and your expected dissertation proposal defense date
  • A 10-page writing sample that demonstrates your writing and research skills
  • A few short answer questions

 

Qualifications

In order to be accepted into the Dissertation Fellowship program, you must:

  • Have advanced to candidacy in a PhD program at Mason
  • Be working on a dissertation that aims at understanding how social change occurs and how to create a freer society.

Submissions are encouraged from Political Science, Public Policy, Cultural Studies, History, Sociology, and all related fields in the humanities and social sciences.

About the Fellowship

The Dissertation Fellowship Program is a one-year, renewable, competitive fellowship program for students who have advanced to candidacy in their PhD program at George Mason University and are working on dissertations that aim at understanding how social change occurs and how to create a freer society. The fellowship award can vary to include research support, stipends, and tuition support.

    No. While our PhD Fellowships are targeted towards students in the GMU Economics program, we welcome applications for our Dissertation Fellowships from any student whose dissertation research relates to understanding social change.

    We utilize the writing sample to examine each applicant’s writing style and ability, grasp of language, and clarity of thought. We are not particularly concerned with the specific content of the sample. Therefore you should choose whichever work you feel will give us the best impression of your skills as a writer.
