The Mercatus Center at George Mason University is pleased to announce that the White House has nominated Vice President for Policy Research William Beach to serve as Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Beach is an expert in labor, econometric models, tax laws, and the national economy. Before joining the Mercatus Center, Beach served as the Chief Economist for the Senate Budget Committee, Republican Staff. Prior to that position, he was the Lazof Family Fellow in Economics at The Heritage Foundation and director of the Foundation’s Center for Data Analysis. In that role, Beach oversaw original statistical research on topics such as Social Security, education, and trade.

A graduate of Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, Beach also holds a master’s degree in history and economics from the University of Missouri-Columbia and a Ph.D. in Economics from Buckingham University in Great Britain.

“Bill’s research and collaboration with his Mercatus colleagues produced thoughtful policy proposals on pressing issues such as tax and regulatory reform,” said Tyler Cowen, general director of the Mercatus Center. “His commitment to high quality data and analysis makes him an excellent candidate for this role.”
