The early decades of the twenty-first century have been traumatic. The onset of civil war and interstate conflicts, terrorism, domestic political polarization and civil strife, financial crises and unsustainable public sector indebtedness, and the emergence of matters such as climate change, income and wealth inequalities, and digital technological transformations are among the issues that have dominated public and political attention and discourses. It is not unreasonable to suggest that it is in such domestic and global environments of strain and disaffection that subscription to values, and the sense of commitment toward, liberal commitments have been sorely tested.
