This paper explores the critical role entrepreneurship plays in economic development and the institutional environment necessary for productive entrepreneurship. First, the argument over early state development planning is examined. Then the paper explores the experience of contemporary Asian economies, looking closely at China and India and examining the overall region. The final section contains conclusions.
