Alternative Futures: The Waning of Liberal Internationalism and the Resurgence of Global Governance Diversity

Hilton Root

Senior Research Fellow

The present institutional structure of the international system does not provide sufficient stimulus for transition to republican democracy as liberal optimists hope. Neither does liberal internationalism provide a coherent historical sociology for the spread of liberal democracy. A new theoretical framework of social relations is needed. Professor Root explains why this is so and describes the sort of features a new set of institutions will require.
