Edwin Meese

Edwin Meese, III was a member of George Mason University’s Board of Visitors from 1996-2004, serving as rector from 1998 until 2004. Prior to that, he was the 75th attorney general of the United States, from February 1985 to August 1988, and counsellor to President Reagan from 1981 to 1985. He functioned as the president's chief policy advisor and as a member of the president's cabinet and the National Security Council. 

He is the Ronald Reagan Distinguished Fellow Emeritus at the Heritage Foundation and a Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. Mr. Meese is also a retired colonel in the United States Army Reserve and a former professor of law at the University of San Diego. Mr. Meese served for eight years on the Mason Board of Visitors, including six years as rector.

Mr. Meese holds a BA in political science from Yale University and a JD from the University of California-Berkeley.
