Matthew D. Mitchell

Senior Research Fellow

Please join Mercatus Center scholar Matthew Mitchell for a lunch and discussion on which states are the most “economically free."

In the last quarter-century, a number of economists have focused on defining and—perhaps more importantly— measuring economic freedom. There are now a number of indices of economic freedom at both the national and state levels. At Mercatus, we have developed our own index: Freedom in the 50 States. The index is the first ever comprehensive ranking of the American states on their policies affecting individual freedoms in the economic, social, and personal spheres. In addition to ranking the states on their policies, the report draws a correlation between economic and personal freedom and net migration, thus explaining budget and population problems in the states that rank toward the bottom of the index.

Matt will discuss our index as well as answer the questions:

  • What exactly is economic freedom?
  • What do we know about the way economic freedom affects prosperity?

This is not a fundraising event and there is no charge to join us. We are pleased to have you as our guest to show our thanks and appreciation to our donors. Dress is business casual. Please invite friends or associates who might be interested.
