Sam Bowman Joins the Mercatus Center Board of Directors

ARLINGTON, VA. — The Mercatus Center at George Mason University is pleased to announce the addition of Sam Bowman to its board of directors, effective October 2022. Bowman is a previous recipient of an award from Emergent Ventures, a Mercatus grant program for social entrepreneurs with highly scalable ideas for meaningfully improving society.

“I’ve been a fan of the Mercatus Center for over a decade, and I’m proud to be joining it today,” said Sam Bowman. “Mercatus’s scholarship is rigorous, interesting and vitally important in helping to make the world better. I’ll do everything I can to help it thrive in the years to come.”

Bowman is a founding editor of Works in Progress, an online magazine dedicated to sharing new and underrated ideas to improve the world. The magazine was created with support from a 2019 Emergent Ventures grant and was acquired by Stripe earlier this year. Prior to founding Works in Progress, Bowman was the director of competition policy at the International Center for Law and Economics and previously served as the executive director of the Adam Smith Institute.

“Sam is a strong intellectual force with a keen understanding of the challenges facing society,” said Tyler Cowen, Faculty Director of the Mercatus Center. “He has experience creating and applying new ideas to tackle real-world challenges and I’m pleased to welcome him to the Mercatus Center board.”

Founded in 1980 at George Mason University, the Mercatus Center is an academic research center that generates knowledge and understanding of the institutions that affect individuals’ freedom to prosper.
