Corporate America’s Ideological Tilt: An Introduction
Originally published in The Independent Review

The papers in this symposium offer a range of insights into the recent rise of corporate social activism. One set of explanations argues that activism arises due to the separation of ownership and control and the failure of the market to punish managers who don't pursue owners' interests—often exacerbated by government intervention. Another set of explanations argues that corporate social activism is a means by which managers maximize profits, so the task of scholars is to discover the nature of the incentives, constraints, and opportunities that cause it to emerge.
