Ashley Berner is a visiting fellow with the Mercatus Center’s Program on Pluralism and Civil Exchange. Dr. Berner is also Director of the Johns Hopkins Institute for Education Policy. She served previously as the Deputy Director of the CUNY Institute for Education Policy and as an administrator at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture, University of Virginia. She is the author of Pluralism and American Public Education: No One Way to School,  and the upcoming Educational Pluralism and American Democracy: Exposure versus Indoctrination. 

Fellowship focus:

  • A book on educational pluralism, making the case for a shift in American education policy towards supporting educational options ranging from religious to secular modes of learning.  

  • An exploration of the conditions under which educational pluralism can result in better student outcomes and foster viewpoint diversity.
