  • PhD Student, Harvard University, Visiting Dissertation Fellow

Jean Vilbert Pereira is an PhD student in Political Science at Harvard University. He earned an MA in International Public Affairs and Latin American Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, an LLM from the University of West Santa Catarina, and an LLB from the Community University of Chapecó Region. He was a Frédéric Bastiat fellow during the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 academic years. His research focuses on the impact of the interactions between legal, political, and economic institutions on citizens' well-being. In particular, his research seeks to better understand why legal guarantees that go as far as food and housing in some developing countries (e.g., in Latin America) are not correlated with improvements in standards of living, and proposes nonstate welfare as a potential solution, that is, communities that organize themselves to provide goods and social services.
