Starter homes, broadly defined as attainably priced homes of modest size, enable owners to build equity, establish long-term stability, and create intergenerational wealth. Despite their name, they also allow seniors to downsize and stay in their communities. Unfortunately, the high costs of land, labor, construction materials and development fees mean that starter homes just aren’t feasible to build in most places, making them among the rarest type of home in production today.
