Dr. Stefanie Haeffele is a Senior Research Fellow, Senior Program and Operations Director of Academic & Student Programs, and a Senior Fellow for the F. A. Hayek Program for Advanced Study in Philosophy, Politics and Economics at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University. She earned both her PhD and MA in Economics from George Mason University and earned a BBA in Economics and Finance from the University of North Alabama. She is an alum of the Mercatus MA Fellowship. 

Her research interests include Austrian economics, political economy, entrepreneurship, and development. Her work has examined post-disaster community recovery as well as the political economy of nonprofit organizations, specifically focusing on organizations that attempt to provide affordable housing to the poor. 

She has published numerous books, including Living Better Together: Social Relations and Economic Governance in the Work of Ostrom and Zelizer (Palgrave Macmillan, 2023) coedited with Virgil Storr, Nudging Public Policy: Examining the Benefits and Limitations of Paternalistic Public Policies (Rowman & Little International, 2021) coedited with Rosemarie Fike and Arielle John, and Community Revival in the Wake of Disaster: Lessons in Local Entrepreneurship (Palgrave Macmillan, 2015) coauthored with Virgil Storr and Laura Grube. 

After receiving her Masters, she completed a Presidential Management Fellowship where she worked in emergency and disaster management at both the Federal Emergency Management Agency and then the US Forest Service.
